Dress Code For Shriya?

January 29, 2008 · 1 Comment

This controversy erupted a few days ago. It was over an outfit worn by her during the 175th day celebration of her film ‘Sivaji-The Boss’. A complaint was lodged with the police by a local Hindu organisation in Chennai, Hindu Makkal Katchi (HMK) alleging that Shriya’s outfit had ‘offended Hindu culture’. Huh? What’s offending in that outfit? Please, can you tell me? Such an outfit is quite commonplace nowadays. And it is very decent when compared to the skimpy dresses that ‘item number’ girls wear in music videos, which are beamed 24/7 on music channels everywhere.

OK, that’s the story till now. Let’s get back to the present. Rediff.com reports,

On Monday, in the Tamil Nadu assembly, Pattali Makkal Katchi member T Velmurugan launched an attack against Tamil television channels, accusing them of airing obscene shows.

A considerable time was spent in the assembly debating whether the government should impose a dress code after seeing Shriya, and another Tamil actress Namita, in clothes the law-makers thought were too revealing.

Is it such an important issue that precious time of the assembly is spent on discussing it? The government has no business deciding what people should wear. It will do a far better service to ‘Hindu culture’ and the nation by concentrating on real issues.

This episode shows how intolerant India is becoming. For more, you can read my previous post on this issue titled The Rise Of An Intolerant India.

I call this Talibanisation of India. It is unacceptable. Only thing we seem to tolerate anymore is …our politicians. I am going to read ‘The Rise Of An Intolerant India’ now.
